Asymmetric realignment: Immigration and right party voting

The second decade of the twenty-first century witnessed a significant ‘rightward drift’ as populists in West scored striking electoral gains. We argue that this reflects shift power cleavages is asymmetric nature. Specifically, voters for whom immigration salient are more likely to switch conservative and national populist parties than liberal or left-wing parties. leverage data from three prominent cases, United States, Britain Germany, demonstrate immigration-specific realignment occurred countries. These findings have implications our understanding politics, populism emerging ‘culture divide’ party systems.
